How do I make an interlibrary loan request?


Make an interlibrary loan request from the Find It record of the desired item or directly from the interlibrary loan request form.

Welch's interlibrary loan service delivers articles and books not in the Johns Hopkins Collection to the Johns Hopkins University and Medicine Community.

Requested items are available between 1-28 days after the request is placed. Articles are typically delivered within seven business days. Books and other physical items may take longer.

Select a pickup location

When requesting an item via interlibrary loan, select the “Welch Medical Library” pickup location for the Medical campus. Faculty may choose “Campus Office Delivery” from the pickup location menu.

Receiving requested items

When the requested item arrives, an email message will be sent with a link to the interlibrary loan website. Click on the link and select one of the following:

  • For articles or book chapters, look in the left-hand column, under the View menu, and select the link to Electronically Received Articles. The requested PDF will display in a list. Save/download the .pdf. Items will remain in the Welch system for 30 days.
  • For a book or video, look in the same column area but select on Checked Out Items.

Complying With Copyright Policy

Welch Library follows United States copyright laws and, when necessary, pay royalty fees to obtain materials for users. 

The copyright law of the United States Title 17, United States Code governs the making of photocopies and other reproductions of copyrighted materials.

Libraries are permitted to obtain copies of copyrighted works under conditions spelled out in sect. 108

People engaged in teaching and research are granted certain reproduction rights in sect. 107 - Limitations on exclusive rights: Fair use.

HINT: When searching for an item, select the Find It button. If Welch provides access to the item, Find It will provide a link to access it. If Welch does not provide access to the desired item, Find It provides a link to an interlibrary loan form with the citation information already filled in.
