The Welch Medical Library is hosting a traveling exhibit produced by the National Library of Medicine: Binding Wounds, Pushing Boundaries: African Americans in Civil War Medicine. The six-banner exhibit, guest curated by Jill L. Newmark of the NLM Exhibition Program, will be on display on the second floor of the Welch Medical Library, 1900 E. Monument St., September 11-October 21, 2023.
The traveling banner exhibition and companion website (https://www.nlm.nih.gov/exhibition/bindingwounds/exhibition.html) explore the stories of the African American men and women who, during the American Civil War, overcame prejudices to serve as soldiers, nurses, surgeons, laundresses, cooks, and laborers. Their participation in the war challenged the prescribed notions about race and gender and pushed the boundaries of the role of black people in America.
