Reference Manager

About Reference Manager

Reference Manager is a program for harvesting, managing and using bibliographic citations. It is particularly popular among scholars and researchers in science and medical fields. As you write a paper or book chapter or book, you can link to references in your Reference Manager database. When finished, with a few clicks of the mouse, you can format the references in your paper to meet the formatting requirements of a particular journal.

Purchasing

  • Reference Manager is available at the Johns Hopkins Medical Book Center at 1830 Monument Street, or it can be purchased directly from Reference Manager

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is the difference between Reference Manager and Refworks and why is Refworks free at Hopkins and Reference Manager is not?

  • The biggest difference is that Refworks is "web-based." You can connect to your library or database any place in the world that has an internet connection. Hopkins has purchased a Refworks institution-wide package for all Hopkins affiliated staff which is why there is no cost to you. Reference Manager is "proprietary" which means you must purchase the software package to install on your personal or work computer. A Reference Manager database and its components therefore do not travel as easily as Refworks.

  • With Refworks now free to all Hopkins staff, how do I move my Reference Manager database into Refworks?

  • 1. Open Reference Manager/Choose Export
    2. Select citations in Reference List that are to be moved.
    3. Important: Name the file
    4. Important: Choose correct Ouput Style (RIS Format)
    5. Export to Desktop
    6. Open Refworks
    7. Under References choose IMPORT 8. Import Filter Sources: RIS Format
    9. Database: Reference Manager
    10. Import References Into: choose folder to move references
    11. Select Import Data from the following Text File/button
    12. Find file named in step 3/Open and Import
