About RSS (Real Simple Syndication)

RSS (Real Simple Syndication) is an XML-based format for distributing content found on the Web. Any information that can be distributed in this format is called a "feed." RSS feeds are used to stay current on topics of interest by monitoring selected web sites for new information and then feeding that information to a web page for you to access at your convenience. This is a popular iconRSS Iconto indicate an RSS feed is available. Some web sites use this icon XML ICon to display RSS feed capability.

RSS feed content is brought together using a feed aggregator, also referred to as a "feed reader." From the reader, you are able to view the latest updates from many feeds in one location. Feed readers can either be installed on your computer or they can be web based. Many feed readers are available to download at no cost from the Web. Examples of popular feed readers include:

  • Google Reader (web based)
  • Bloglines (web based)
  • NewsGator (web based or desktop)
  • FeedReader (desktop)

1. Run a search in PubMed.
2. Choose "RSS Feed" from the "Send to" drop-down menu.
3. From the next screen, choose a name for the feed and limit the number of items (between 5 -100) to be displayed, and click "Create Feed."
