Accessing Full-Text Articles

About Accessing Full-Text Articles

Welch Medical Library has current subscriptions to thousands of electronic journals. Your membership in the Hopkins community allows you to access the articles in those journals. If you are off campus you are required to authenticate using your JHED username and password by clicking the .

For many but not all journals we purchased online access to earlier volumes. For older articles we may or may not have an electronic version immediately available. You will need to work through WelDoc to obtain it.

We recommend that you search for Welch e-resources from the Welch Medical Digital Library Collection.

By doing so you ensure that you have the most current information about our journal holdings.

Additionally links from our web site to journals are configured to automatically let you log in as a Hopkins community member when off-campus.  But you have to login once using the .

Please note that when the URL for a journal or a database changes, that information is kept  up to date it on our web site.

The three main ways to access full-text journal articles are:

  • If you frequently look up journals and articles bookmark the Welch Medical Digital Library Collection. On this page you can browse journals or enter citations for specific article using
  • If you know the title of the journal use the JHU Libraries Catalog to search for it.  The catalog includes information about journals JHU Libraries have in print and electronic format.
  • If you have a citation in a database  (e.g., PubMed, SCOPUS, Web of Science, Embase, PsycInfo, etc.) look for the Click here to read or which will take you directly to the article whenever possible. If no direct route to the article can be built will display a screen with information on how to get the article.

Note: There will be instances when you might have difficulty accessing full text, even though you know we have an electronic subscription. This could be due to a browser issue, a subscription renewal that is in process, or a missing full-text icon, etc. Please review troubleshooting tips listed below.

Fequently Asked Questions

I'm having difficulty accessing a full-text article. What are some trouble-shooting tips I can try?

  • Access all journals and databases, including PubMed, from the Welch Medical Library web site. Links from that site will automatically ask you to login using your JHED username and password if needed for off-campus access.
  • Check that you are using the latest version of your browser and Adobe Reader. You may need to download an upgraded version of each.
  • Try a different browser. For example, if you use Internet Explorer and have trouble, try Mozilla Firefox.
  • If you are off-site, be sure to use either the libraries proxy service or JH Connect which is available via the MyJohnsHopkins. All of the links we construct (in the catalog, and our web pages) are configured to route you through this proxy service.
  • The journal may have multiple publishers. Check the coverage of the journal for that publisher.
  • If the record lists multiple full-text icons, try each one, beginning withClick here to read and then .
  • If there are multiple publishers listed within the menu, try each of them

I work at Kennedy Krieger or Howard County General Hospital and cannot access full-text from my office.

This may be an IP address issue. Please send an email message to Eteam with the
name of the journal you are trying to access so we can work with the publisher to correct the issue.

I received a "Spider Trap Error Message." What should I do?

The "Spider Trap Error Message," may be an IP address issue. Please send an email message to eteam@hydra.welch.jhu.edu with the name of the journal you are trying to access so we can work with the publisher to correct the issue.

I noticed that you have some journals only in print. Can I get an electronic copy of a full-text article from a print journal?

Yes! Any article that is in a print journal can be ordered electronically through the Welch Library Interlibrary Loan and Document Delivery Service (Weldoc).
