Welch Document Services provides books and articles for users at no cost. The Welch Library subsidizes JHMI patrons' requests. In order to use the service effectively, users are encouraged to check the JHU Libraries Catalog and Find It before ordering. Users must make the request themselves in the JHU Libraries Catalog for books owned within the JHU libraries, except for those owned by the Washington Center. Books owned by the Washington Center may be ordered via Weldoc. Books and journal volumes at the Libraries Service Center location must be ordered directly by the user through the catalog. We do not fill requests for materials from the Wilmer Library. All other materials can be ordered via the Weldoc system. JHMI personnel with current Welch library cards and active Weldoc accounts are eligible to use the service.
All requests must be submitted electronically via Weldoc or PubMed. We do not accept requests on paper, fax, email or by phone. We cannot copy articles that exceed 50 pages in length. Articles will be delivered to the desktop electronically and books may be picked up at the Welch Service Center. There will be no hand delivery to offices.
Requests must be made via Weldoc or PubMed. To use the service, first apply for a Weldoc account. After completing the Weldoc registration, if you are a PubMed user, please apply for a Loansome Doc account. YOUR LOGIN ID FOR WELDOC MUST BE THE SAME LOGIN ID YOU USED FOR PUBMED in order for the system to work. You will be asked for the library ID during the Loansome Doc application process; Welch's ID is "mdujhu". Users must be registered in these systems before they can make a request.
If you have any questions about how to make your requests, please visit the web tutorial Ordering Documents Using Weldoc.
In most cases, articles will be available in 7 working days (Monday through Friday). Books may take up to two weeks. Incorrect or incomplete requests will take longer. If a request has to go to more than one library to be filled, it will take longer. Welch staff process up to 5 requests per day per user. The Not Wanted After Date line on the form should be filled in so that the library will not try to fill a request that is no longer needed. Requestors may track their requests online; there is no need to call the document services department.
Users may save time by checking Proquest Dissertations and Theses before submitting their requests. Many dissertations and theses are avaiilable for downloading from this database. Retrieving this way saves having to wait for the request to be processed. If the holding library lends its dissertations and masters' theses, Welch will attempt to borrow them. If the holding university does not lend, the patron can obtain the item himself from University Microfilms. Forms for ordering dissertations from University Microfilms are available online.
The staff will continue to provide an emergency fax service for clinical emergencies only. Turnaround time is 4 hours for this service.
It is the policy of the Welch Medical Library to respect the proprietary rights of the owners of copyrighted material. Therefore, document services staff will conform to copyright law when borrowing or copying material.
