Tips for Getting Full-Text Articles
Below are listed the best ways in which Welch Library users may obtain full-text articles through our online resources. There is also information on other document resources such as copyright and remote access.
- From the JHU Libraries Catalog
- From PubMed Citations
- From EBSCOhost and other Databases
- From WelchWeb's e-Resources Listings
- Information about Usernames and Passwords
- Information about Copyright
- Getting Articles from Home

Full-Text from the JHU Libraries Catalog
From the JHU Libraries Catalog, select Alphabetical, then Journal/Newspaper Title to find out where a particular journal is located. Enter all or part of the full journal title. You can also find out whether that journal has an online subscription, as indicated below.

Some books and journals are sometimes located in our remote storage facility, the Libraries Service Center. Fill out this form to request items from there.
Full-Text from PubMed
Users should always access PubMed from the WelchWeb
navigation bar above. This special link allows you to view full-text
options when reviewing abstracts from your search results. Here
is an example of viewing Welch full-text options,
,
at the abstract level in PubMed:

If there is no full-text button, then try selecting "Links", then "LinkOut" to find alternate ways to get full-text. NOTE:Links to full-text articles may or may not be listed.
In cases where there is just a print icon,
,
this means that the Welch Library System has this title in its
print collection. To make sure there is no full-text availability,
it is wise to always double check the JHU
Libraries Catalog for other full-text options, if they
exist. If none are, then you may request this article directly
through PubMed through the Loansome Doc service. Requested articles
are sent to users' Weldoc accounts
within 3-5 business days. More information on how to register
for this service can be found here.
Occasionally you may encounter a publisher-provided link to full-text access in PubMed. This is no indication that Welch subscribes to this particular journal or not. Access may be granted where the publisher has provided the article free of charge, or the library subscribes to. For a majority of these journals, subscriptions are needed for access, in which case you should see a Welch Full-Text icon. Remember, it is always best to check the catalog for library holdings.
Full-Text Articles with SFX
In the EBSCOhost databases, Web of Science, and OCLC databases,
check the
links
for full-text options. An example is here.
SFX is a tool that allows users to see all options
for full-text from JHU Libraries' journal subscriptions while
searching in a database. The link will help you move between the
database, the full text of the journal, the library catalog, or
Weldoc. In some databases the link may look slightly different,
but it will still work the same. You may also search the SFX
database to see if the journal is listed.
If there is no option for full-text in the SFX
window, then click on
and
fill out the form for quicker requesting service. The article
will be available in 3-5 business days.
Some EBSCOhost databases, such as Academic Search Premier, are comprised of all full-text journals. Connect to the database through the Welch Databases link, click on the "Publications" tab and browse the listed titles for the article you need.
Full-Text Journals from WelchWeb's E-Resources List
The Welch Medical Library maintains an extensive listing of our online journal title subscriptions, found on our e-resources Web page. You may search for a title by entering all or part of the title in the search box or browse alphabetically:

You can view the availability of the online subscription directly from these journal lists. For example, the title below is available online from 1997 onwards:

It is also possible to see a listing of online journals in your particular discipline.
Some journals which other Hopkins Libraries subscribe to are not listed in our e-Journals list but are in the JHU Libraries Catalog.
Usernames and Passwords
Very few journals require separate login/passwords—about a dozen out of approximately 3,000 titles that we subscribe to. For the journals that do (such as Gastroenterology), we have a link next to the journal title that provides the necessary information. An example is below.

Information about Copyright
Occasionally you may get a cancelled request due to copyright restrictions.
When more than 5 requests have been made from any 1
journal in any 1 year within the last 5 years
from the current year, we can no longer obtain it. We handle these
requests on a case-by-case basis and will try to accommodate your
needs as best as we can. For more information on these cancelled
orders, please contact the Weldoc Office at
410-955-3418.
If your request is not urgent, you may purchase article through Ingenta Connect, from the publisher site, or you may want to check the University of Maryland Health Sciences Library Catalog, or the National Library of Medicine's Catalog for their holdings information.
