A-Z: LIBRARY RESOURCES AND ACCESS

Learn to use Welch resources and services more effectively. Topics covered: accessing our 5000+ full-text journals from home or office, using Weldoc and the JHU Catalog to request electronic articles and books, how and where to search for articles by subject, and how to request group instruction and individual consultations with your department's assigned Welch librarian.


CITATION SEARCHING

Ever wonder how many times an article you have written has been cited? Maybe a colleague or mentor's articles? If this sounds like something you want to learn how to do, this lecture is for you! Learn how to use ISI Web of Science, SCOPUS , and Google Scholar to find citations, as well as discussing the pros and cons of citation searching and the h-index.

 

COLLEXIS

Learn how to use Collexis, a subscription database and tool that allows you to identify JHMI faculty biomedical experts and their publications by area of expertise, based on their published output indexed in PubMed. If you need to keep up with the continuing influx of new faculty and post-docs working in your area, or you want to see if there are JHMI investigators focusing on a complementary phase of the bench-to-bedside lifecycle, or you need to put together multidisciplinary teams to tackle translational and big-science research projects, Collexis might be the right resource to help you.


ENDNOTE

EndNote is a citation-management software application that makes saving citations and then citing them within documents easy. EndNote's pre-formatted style templates speed up composition. Learn how to manage and cite text and images, create subject bibliographies, and access various output styles.


EVIDENCE-BASED RESOURCES

Evidence-based care promotes the use of scientific literature in the clinical decision process -- with a fuller understanding of the varying levels of evidence that individual studies provide. Learn to develop EBM-formatted clinical questions, identify EBM resources that best vet the literature and indicate its levels of evidence, form effective search strategies, locate practice guidelines, systematic reviews, clinical trials, and other EBM information. Cochrane Library, DynaMed, PubMed Clinical Queries and InfoPOEMs are among resources to be covered.


EXPERT SEARCHING IN PUBLC HEALTH RESOURCES

This session will provide an introduction to the process of creating extensive but efficient public health literature searches. We'll cover broadly applicable methods such as how to turn your idea into a focused, searchable topic, as well as pointers and tips on how to search specific key databases within several public health domains.


FINDING FUNDING FOR YOUR RESEARCH

Identifying funding opportunities is essential to the Hopkins research community. This session will provide an introduction and demonstration of the major funding databases, including Community of Science and IRIS. We'll explore funding opportunities from government as well as private organizations.


INTRODUCTION TO ArcGIS

This half-day course introduces students to ArcGIS, the most widely used geographic information systems (GIS) software. Learn the basics of ArcGIS, how to work with spatial data, and how to create maps. If your research calls for making maps or using a geographic information system to analyze data, then this class is for you.


GEOCODING AND JOINING DATA USING ArcGIS

Prequisite: ArcGIS

Learn the steps required for successful joining of data and geocoding along with tips and suggestions for preparing data for use with ArcGIS. Common file formats will be discussed, (e.g. Excel, dBase, Access), along with text files and data with x, y coordinates. We'll explore street files available from the library along with optional interfaces for the geocoding process.

 

GOOGLE TOOLS

Google has changed the way in which we interact with information, but there is more to Google than the search box. iGoogle is your personalized portal to the Internet. Learn how to configure your own iGoogle page with Google gadgets and how to collect all of your information resources in one place using Google Reader. Google Scholar is a search tool that provides a simple way to broadly search for scholarly material, as well as identifying the most relevant research across the world of scholarly research. 


INTRODUCTION TO GRANT WRITING

Designed for those with little or no grant-writing experience, this session introduces essentials of grant preparation, from developing a research idea to revising and resubmitting a proposal. The focus is on R01 applications for the NIH, but many of the principles apply equally to proposals for other agencies. The course emphasizes conveying scientific content clearly and succinctly through logical organization and effective presentation of the proposed research.


INTRODUCTION TO WEB ACCESSIBILITY

This session provides an overview of why and how to make Web sites accessible. See examples of how people with disabilities use assistive technologies to access the Web, which illustrate the rationale behind various Web-accessibility guidelines. Learn how to apply those guidelines to create accessible Web sites (HTML, PDFs), and evaluate and improve the accessibility of a Web page of your choice.


INTERMEDIATE WEB ACCESSIBILITY

Prerequisite: Introduction to Web Accessibility

The intermediate session covers additional tools and tips to enhance Web accessibility. Evaluate and improve the accessibility of a Web page of your choice


LIFE BEYOND PUBMED

Embark on a guided tour of valuable databases and resources to which Welch Library subscribes. Learn when and why you should consult resources that complement PubMed, such as Embase, Scopus, Web of Science, CINAHL and others and learn searching skills within these resources.


PATIENT EDUCATION RESOURCES FOR CLINICIANS

Are your patients asking you where to find more health information? This session covers authoritative resources - subscription-based and free - where clinicians can find information to share with patients, such as MDConsult, Up-to-Date, Micromedex, MedlinePlus, NIH SeniorHealth, and Womenshealth.gov.


PLANNING AND WRITING THE BIOMEDICAL RESEARCH PAPER

This two-day session guides you through the entire process of drafting and revising a peer-reviewed manuscript, from organizing your raw data to checking the final proofs. A combination of short lectures, informal discussions, and in-class exercises will teach you how to apply your analytical skills and problem-solving abilities to the task of producing an effective, readable manuscript. Participants who would like to receive feedback from the class are encouraged to bring copies of your own manuscripts-in-progress to the first class session.


PUBMED: SEARCH LIKE A PRO

PubMed is the National Library of Medicine's database that provides access to over 17 million biomedical citations and offers links to many online publications and related articles. Learn about Citation Matcher to locate incomplete citations and how the Details, History and Clipboard features can assist you in creating searches and managing results. Learn to build expert search strategies with the Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) Database, save search strategies and set up alerts via MyNCBI, and how to access Welch electronic journal holdings or request articles through FIND IT @ JH.


QUOSA

Downloading and organizing scientific literature and entering citation information into citation management software can be time-consuming. Trying to find information you know you read or even stored somewhere can be a challenge. QUOSA is a document- and search-results management and storage tool. Learn how you can use it to download PDFs automatically from PubMed, Ovid and many other databases; organize your PDFs, presentations and documents and save them with your preferred naming convention (e.g. author/journal/year); search all full-text and citation information within your saved results; and export entire folders into EndNote or Reference Manager -- or import them into QUOSA, including all available PDFs, in a copyright compliant manner.


REFERENCE MANAGER

Reference Manager is software to help you organize, store and use bibliographic references in an easy, efficient way. Learn the many methods of gathering and managing citations, and how to customize the program. Learn to create, modify and update bibliographies in manuscripts, grants and CVs.


REFWORKS

RefWorks is a Web-based citation management tool for grants, CVs and manuscripts to which JHU has an institutional site license. Learn how to capture, manage, and work with citations. Learn RefWorks features and tools including tips on working collaboratively, how to move from Reference Manager or EndNote to RefWorks, and how to use the tool within the Hopkins environment


TEN THINGS I WISH SOMEONE HAD TOLD ME ABOUT WRITING A RESEARCH PAPER

This lecture will offer advice to guide early-career researchers through the process of drafting, revising and submitting manuscripts to peer-reviewed publications. You'll learn helpful strategies for getting started, organizing the paper, and providing the required scientific content. You'll receive a select bibliography of print and Internet resources for scientific writing as well.


WRITING EFFECTIVE ABSTRACTS

Learn practical guidelines for producing an abstract that really works -- one that is informative, interesting and concise. We'll analyze well-written and flawed abstracts to discover what editors and readers expect to see in the abstract of a research manuscript and to learn how to avoid common abstract-writing pitfalls
