A-Z: LIBRARY RESOURCES AND ACCESS

Learn to use Welch resources and services more effectively. Topics covered: accessing our 5000+ full-text journals from home or office, using WelDoc and the JHU Catalog to request electronic articles and books, how and where to search for articles by subject, and how to request group instruction and individual consultations with your department´s assigned Welch librarian.


CONNECTING TO AND USING LIBRARY RESOURCES

Sometimes the biggest hurdle in researching from home is being able to view and print the information available. This lecture will demonstrate how to download and install the JHSecure VPN client and introduce the MyWelch EZproxy service, an alternative way to access some Welch resources from off-campus. Tips and techniques for getting to online copies of articles will also be demonstrated.


ENDNOTE BASICS

EndNote is a citation-management software application that makes saving citations and then citing them within documents easy. EndNote�s pre-formattedstyle templates speed up composition. Learn how to manage and cite text and images, create subject bibliographies, and access various output styles.


FINDING FUNDING FOR YOUR RESEARCH

Identifying funding opportunities is essential to the Hopkins research community. This session will provide an introduction and demonstration of the major funding databases, including Community of Science and IRIS. We�ll explore funding opportunities from government as well as private organizations.


INTRODUCTION TO GRANT WRITING

Designed for those with little or no grant-writing experience, this session introduces essentials of grant preparation, from developing a research idea to revising and resubmitting a proposal. The focus is on R01 applications for the NIH, but many of the principles apply equally to proposals for other agencies. The course emphasizes conveying scientific content clearly and succinctly through logical organization and effective presentation of the proposed research.


LIFE BEYOND PUBMED

Embark on a guided tour of valuable databases and resources to which Welch Library subscribes. Learn when and why you should consult resources that complement PubMed, such as Embase, Scopus, Web of Science, CINAHL and others and learn searching skills within these resources.


ONCOLOGY NURSING: RESOURCES AND SEARCHING SKILLS

Examine and explore effective searching strategies within a variety of subscription-based and free online nursing information resources. We�ll highlight oncology-specific resources as well as searching tips for finding oncology-related material within broader nursing information resources.


PUBMED ADVANCED

Learn advanced aspects of PubMed searching, including how to build expert search strategies utilizing the Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) Database, and other tips and tricks. Learn to use MyNCBI to save filters for customized PubMed searches and to receive e-mail alerts for new articles

PubMed is the National Library of Medicine�s database that provides access to over 17 million biomedical citations and offers links to many online publications and related articles. Learn basic searching skills, how and why to use the History, Clipboard, and Details features, and how to use the Single Citation Matcher to locate incomplete citations. Learn to save searches, use FIND IT to access full-text articles to which Welch subscribes, and to use Weldoc to get electronic articles that we don�t own.

Learn RefWorks features, tools and tips on working collaboratively, as well as how to move citations from Reference Manager or EndNote to RefWorks.


TEN THINGS I WISH SOMEONE HAD TOLD ME ABOUT WRITING A RESEARCH PAPER

This lecture will offer advice to guide early-career researchers through the process of drafting, revising and submitting manuscripts to peer-reviewed publications. You�ll learn helpful strategies for getting started, organizing the paper, and providing the required scientific content. You�ll receive a select bibliography of print and Internet resources for scientific writing as well.


USING POWERPOINT 2007 FOR PRESENTATIONS

Review everything you need to know about PowerPoint to create a professional presentation. Topics include a PowerPoint overview, choosing the proper type of chart to represent your data, inserting graphics and other media into your presentation, and lots of useful tips and tricks.


WRITING EFFECTIVE ABSTRACTS

Learn practical guidelines for producing an abstract that really works -- one that is informative, interesting and concise. We�ll analyze well-written and flawed abstracts to discover what editors and readers expect to see in the abstract of a research manuscript and to learn how to avoid common abstract-writing pitfalls
