Welch Library Online Orientation
Overview
This Orientation is designed to give an overview of the Welch Medical Library, its services and its resources, both on campus and by remote access. The library's goal is to provide information to clinicians and researchers when and where they need it. We recognize our patrons' time constraints and their need for fast, accurate information. For this reason the Orientation is divided into modules, which can be viewed sequentially or non-sequentially in one or more sittings.
Many of our resources are restricted to Library Card Holders. You can apply for a library card online.
Modules:

The Left Menu bar features a QuickLink menu and QuickSearch feature at the top. The rest of the menu items on that bar feature mouse-over options.
In the center column:
Electronic RESOURCES will take you to the primary databases and resources supported by the library. This page will be reviewed in detail later.
e-journals provide a list of the Electronic Journals subscribed to by the library as well as some free journals.
e-databases will take you to an alphabetic list of over 100 databases available through the library. This list covers several academic disciplines and is not limited to medicine and health sciences.
e-books provide a list of titles mostly obtained by subscription but some free books are available as well.
e-reserves features the School of Medicine Reserve collection for students and faculty.
On the right hand side of the page several news items about the library are featured as well as rotating graphics featuring many of Welch's resources and services. Science News is also feature here.
Remote access is the easiest way to reach thousands of resources from your home or anywhere outside of the Hopkins netword. To connect to eBooks, eJournals and Databases use VPN.
Literature Searching Databases
Welch offers several literature searching databases, all found under ElectronicRESOURCES.
PubMed The National Library of Medicine provides an excellent tutorial for
this database. Be sure to view the section on Links/Link-Out,
which covers the publishers' icons to full-text articles. Welch
subscribes to over a thousand electronic journals and direct links
have been provided where possible, but we do not subscribe to
all journals. Thus some of the icons may not connect to the full-text
articles. The whole tour takes about one hour, but specific sections
are easily located and reviewed in minutes.

(app. 15
minutes) View selected items on the left menu bar and use the
tabs at the top of the screen to learn about specific points. Review
the tutorial and then try a few practice searches found at the
bottom of the left menu bar.
UpToDate
Reviewed topics on medical specialties.

Cochrane Library
This is a database of systematic reviews on various topics and
is easy to search. Enter terms and combine with AND, OR,
or NOT. Click on ENTER, no password is required for this
database.

Harrison's
Online
This is the famous medical textbook available on line and
searchable!

MD
Consult
Easy access is available by clicking on "Open Generic Edition." For
extended features set up a "Personal Account." This versatile
database will allow users to search textbooks, journals, patient
guidelines.

Stat!REF
Stat!REF provides searchable full-text books, including core subjects, pharmacology sources, and codes.

MICROMEDIX
This is another excellent resource for pharmaceutical information.

Science Citation Index
This is a great resource for tracking the development of research on certain topics or seeing how many times an article was cited and who cited it.

TRIP Database
This database searches 58 sites of high-quality medical information. The TRIP Database gives you direct, hyper-linked access to the largest collection of 'evidence-based' material on the web as well as articles from premier on-line journals such as the BMJ, JAMA, NEJM etc. It is very easy to use and assumes intersection of two terms, but can use AND, OR or NOT to specify relationships.

National Guideline Clearinghouse
This is a public resource for evidence-based clinical practice. It contains summarized guidelines. Try a few searches.

PubMed Clinical Queries
This is a feature of PubMed that focuses on medical evidence. It has predetermined search strategies design to locate articles on diagnosis, therapy, etiology, and prognosis by both sensitivity and specificity.

Other EBM Resources
This is a link to Welch's Web page of EBM resources. It contains several of the databases listed above as well as statistical tools and educational resources for Evidence-Based Medicine.

Full text articles can be found three ways.
- Direct links to articles in PubMed and other e-databases.
- The e-journal page provides a comprehensive list of E-journal and detail connection instructions.
- The JHU Libraries Catalog provides location information for both e-journals and printed journals.
e-journals - E-journals come from a number of different publishers. With that in mind, if you experience difficulty connecting to a particular e-journal, it may be due to problems related to the publisher's server. Please notify us if you experience any connection problems.
Some publications require passwords. Please contact us at the Welch Service Center (410-955-3410) for this information.
There is a convenient search feature at the top of the page.

All Journals - The JHU Libraries Catalog provides location information for all holdings held in any of the Johns Hopkins Libraries, except the Applied Physics Lab. Direct connections to electronic publications are offered, however, it is always best to double check the Electronic Journals page if a journal is not available.

*Helpful Hint*: Open two browsers while searching for articles in PubMed. If a direct link is not available to the article in PubMed, you can quickly check the e-journals page. The final place to check is the JHU Libraries catalog.
Not Available? If Welch does not own the journal our InterLibrary Loan office can obtain a copy of the article for you. Use the Weldoc system to make this request.
Although books are increasingly published in electronic formats, the majority of textbooks are still published in print, not to mention the existing extensive medical collection held by Welch.
The JHU Libraries Catalog - This system will give you location information for books on all Johns Hopkins Campuses. Be sure to note the location and call number information before retrieving a book. If a book is on another campus, and you want it, use Weldoc or place a request at the Welch Service Center to have it brought to Welch. It might take a few days, but you will be able to borrow it from our Welch Service Center.

e-Books - Our E-book collection is somewhat limited but will continue to grow at a faster rate then our printed collection. For most books there are direct links to the book and many are searchable. For others an E-book Reader will be required. This software is easy to use.
Locating Resources Outside of Welch
Weldoc - Weldoc is great service for obtaining books and journal articles outside the Welch collection. Orders are processed within three days and most journals articles are available within the next three days. Book requests may take up to three weeks because they travel through the U.S. Postal system.
University of Maryland Health Sciences - This library is the next closest Health Science Library in Baltimore. A link to their collection is at the bottom of the Gateway page.
World Catalog - This is another resource to use if you need to obtain an item Welch does not own, and want to see if you can get it yourself at another library. For each item on the catalog there is a link to a list of libraries that own the book.
Welch Service Center - For assistance with any library services you can contact the Welch Service Center at 410-955-3410 or electronically Ask A Librarian.
Renew library books - Library books can be renewed using the JHU Libraries Catalog from any location.

Establish a Billing Accounts: Billing accounts can be established for Photocopy, Literature Searches and Document Delivery. Use the online form or contact Brenda Wood in Room 109 (see map) at 410-955-7269.
