The NIRC staff answer reference questions, perform computer searches, teach people how to use library equipment and facility, assist users operating the microcomputers in the nearby computer lab, and direct people to information sources. The staff provide instruction on using the Welch Gateway which includes MEDLINE, the JHU Libraries Catalog, and several other databases and resources.
A core collection of nursing books and some general materials are maintained at the NIRC. Several video cassettes and computer assisted instruction programs on nursing skills are available. Only four journals are subscribed to: American Journal of Nursing, Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, Nursing Outlook, and Nursing Research. The International Nursing Index is available back to 1986.
Near the NIRC in Room 303 is a computer lab with 20 IBM compatible computers. Several software programs are available. The computers are set up to access the Welch Gateway. The microcomputers are only for the use of the faculty, staff, and students of the School of Nursing.
The NIRC is primarily a reserve collection. Patrons can check out books and audiovisual materials with a valid Welch library card or a card from another JHU Horizon library.
