To meet the needs of scholarly communication in all formats, this department develops the Welch collections, borrows necessary materials to extend the collections, and provides copy services for users of the collections. The unit processes and provides online access to digital resources that the library owns or licenses as well as selecting, processing and maintaining necessary print materials. The department is also responsible for the binding and preservation of materials and for accepting and acknowledging book and journal gifts to the library. The Cataloging Unit maintains bibliographic and holdings information included in the online catalog. The Serials Unit orders, receives, and claims serials titles. Incoming and outgoing mail are processed and delivered by the department. The Document Services Group is responsible for borrowing and lending on interlibrary loan, tracking copyright compliance, and for Welch document delivery (in-house copy service) and photocopy services.

Answers general reference questions, refers in-depth questions to liaison librarians. Instructs faculty, staff, and students in using library resources. Answers questions concerning library programs and services. Directs people to information sources within and outside of Johns Hopkins. Provides assistance with in-house audiovisual equipment. Provides basic assistance with computer searches, referees in-depth searches to liaison librarians. Teaches faculty, staff, and students how to use the Weldoc Document Services. Coordinates reserves for the School of Medicine and Public Health. Communicates library access policy to Johns Hopkins faculty, staff, students as well as university guests and library staff. Registers new library users and updates current users. Checks library materials in and out, renews them or places holds for library users.

Oversees the appropriate use, storage and preservation of the rare book, manuscript and modern secondary source collections housed on the third floor and the seventh and eighth floor stack levels. Acquires and processes antiquarian resources and secondary books and current journals in the history of medicine. Provides a public service/circulation desk in the Rare Book Reading Room. Handles on-site history of medicine reference inquiries and those received via mail/e-mail/telephone. Accepts and acknowledges gifts and initiates and processes transfers of antiquarian material from the general collection.
