Welch Journal Club

October 3, 2006

Debbie McClellan, Research Associate, Welch Medical Library

What makes a journal prestigious? How do authors choose a target journal? What impact do--and should--journal impact factors have on these decisions? We will discuss some of the uses and abuses of impact factors and explore their place in the scientific community.

Readings:

  • The history and meaning of the journal impact factor.
  • Counting on citations: a flawed way to measure quality.
  • The "omnipotent" Science Citation Index impact factor.
