Admission and Library Privileges

Johns Hopkins University (JHU) faculty, staff, retired faculty/staff members and students

Individuals must present a current JHU identification badge to the security guard to enter the library. A library card is required to use some services. JHU faculty, staff and students can get a card by presenting their identification badge at one of the library's service sites or by filling out the electronic registration form. To ensure that access to library services continues without interruption, cards must be renewed every year for patrons who are affiliated with Johns Hopkins Health Systems.

Spouses of Johns Hopkins University (JHU) faculty, staff and students

Spouses and same-sex partners of faculty, staff, and currently enrolled students may borrow from all the libraries of the Johns Hopkins University according to the policies set up by the individual libraries. A library card should be applied for from the library serving the division where the spouse is employed or enrolled. To ensure that access to library services continues without interruption, cards must be renewed every year. A photo ID is required to enter Hopkins libraries.

Dependents of Johns Hopkins University (JHU) faculty and staff

Dependents of faculty and staff may borrow from all the libraries of the Johns Hopkins University according to the policies set up by the individual libraries. A library card should be applied from the library serving the division where the faculty, staff member is employed. The extent of privileges may vary from library to library. Dependents are usually full-time students between the ages of 18 and 26 or non-students who are 18 to 19 years old. To ensure that access to library services continues without interruption, cards must be renewed every year. A photo ID is required to enter Hopkins libraries.

Johns Hopkins University and Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions (JHMI) alumni

University alumni must be a current member of the alumni association and present a valid membership card before entering the library to use in-house resources of Welch Library and to do photocopying. JHMI alumni may enter the library without an alumni card during business hours. However, JHMI alumni with a current alumni card, have permission to apply for a library card to use Welch library services such as borrowing, photocopying, and using in-house resources. In-house use of databases is permitted but remote access is prohibited. The Harrison Library at Bayview does not honor alumni access.

Alumni of the Johns Hopkins University may purchase borrowing privileges from individual libraries or, for a larger fee, from all Hopkins libraries. Single membership buys access to only the one library collection ($100); the larger (all libraries) membership ($200 per year) buys physical access to all print/av collections. It is intended that alumni purchase their privileges from the library in the school from which they graduated. A photo ID is required to enter Hopkins libraries. The Harrison Library at Bayview does not honor alumni access.

Faculty and students from other colleges and universities

Free admission to the Welch Library and Satellite libraries is granted to faculty who have a current identification badge from their own institutions. Students are also offered free admission by presenting an identification badge for the current semester or academic year to the Hopkins libraries. A photo ID is required. The Harrison Library at Bayview does not honor non-Hopkins user access.

Other unaffiliated health professionals

The Welch Library offers several for-fee admission options for persons in biomedical or health-related professions who are not affiliated with Hopkins. Individuals or corporations can pay an annual or daily fee for access to the Welch Library and Satellite libraries and use a variety of services. For additional information, please call 410-955-3596.
