- Welch Library is awarded $25,000 from Army Medical
Library to establish the Library
Indexing Project. The “Welch Medical Project” would
study the problems of medical bibliography, with the emphasis on
application of machine methods. Sanford Larkey heads the project.
The report recommends continuing work in the area, which eventually
leads to the MEDLARS system. The Project also studies the merits
of medical subject headings and is an early step in the development
of the MeSH (medical subject headings) language. The project
laid the foundation for MEDLINE through its study of the mechanization
of indexing; it terminated in 1953.
